Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to questions our fundraisers ask:
The Wellington Free Ambulance Onesie Appeal is our biggest community fundraising event of the year.
It is called Onesie because when you phone an emergency ambulance service, you dial 111. So, essentially we are the Ones! Here for our community when they need us the most.
Wellington Free Ambulance is proudly the ones for anyone in Greater Wellington and Wairarapa. As the only emergency ambulance service for the population of around 500,000 people we provide all services free of charge.
Our Onesie Appeal runs for a week and takes place in early September each year.
- Onesie Appeal 8-14 September
- Street Collection - Thursday11th and Saturday 13th in Wellington, and Friday 12th & Saturday 13th in Wairarapa
- Onesie Day - all across the region Friday 12 September
Onesies are a fun part of our appeal - but not at all compulsory! Lots of people support Onesie Appeal and don't wear one.
Absolutely not - we appreciate that onesies are not for everyone. We want you to have fun fundraising for Wellington Free Ambulance so please do what's most comfortable for you.
Wellington Free Ambulance is the only emergency ambulance service for Greater Wellington and Wairarapa and we do not charge patients who need our services. We believe that freely accessible emergency healthcare is important for everyone in our community to ensure that ability to pay does not impact a person's ability to get potentially life saving care.
As an essential health service, we receive the majority of our funding from the Government and ACC but must fundraise around $8.5million each year from our community to keep services free of charge. Read Why It Matters here.
Everything donated to Onesie Appeal will go directly towards ensuring our services remain free of charge to anyone who needs us across our entire region. Each year, we answer more than 260,000 emergency 111 calls and respond to over 54,000 incidents, that's 147 calls outs every single day completely free of charge thanks to the support of people like you.
