Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to questions our fundraisers ask:

The Wellington Free Ambulance Onesie Appeal is our biggest community fundraising event of the year.

It is called Onesie because when you phone an emergency ambulance service, you dial 111. So, essentially we are the Ones! We are also the ones for Greater Wellington and Wairarapa, being the only emergency ambulance service in the region, and the only ambulance service in New Zealand that is free.

Our Onesie Appeal runs for a week and takes place in the first week of September. In 2023 the key dates are:

  • Onesie Appeal 4-10 September
  • Street Collection - Thursday 7th and Saturday 9th in Wellington, and Friday 8th & Saturday 9th in Wairarapa
  • Onesie Day - all across the region Friday 8 September

Onesies are a fun part of our appeal - but not at all compulsory! Lots of people support Onesie Appeal and don't wear one.

Absolutely not - we appreciate that onesies are not for everyone. We want you to have fun fundraising for Wellington Free Ambulance so please do what's most comfortable for you.

Wellington Free Ambulance is the only emergency ambulance service for Greater Wellington and Wairarapa and the only free ambulance service in New Zealand.

As an essential health service, we receive the majority of our funding from the Government and ACC but must fundraise around $7million each year from our community to keep services free of charge. Read Why It Matters here.

Everything donated to Onesie Appeal will go directly towards ensuring our services remain free of charge to anyone who needs us. Each year, we answer more than 151,000 emergency 111 calls and respond to over 52,000 incidents where people need our help.

In 2023, people also have the opportunity to direct their donations toward our Build Wairarapa Station Campaign and support the build of a state-of-the-art ambulance station for the Wairarapa region.
